December 31, 2002

In a few short hours, it will be January 1st, 2003. Some of you may have big plans on New Year's Eve, partying the year away. I never know if people are celebrating getting rid of the old year or the coming of a new year. Either way, I never do anything for new Year's. Last year I went to Vegas, walked 500 miles in 3 days, spent a chunk of change and almost got married. The year before that, I think I was playing video games and missed watching the big ball drop on TV (it was tape delayed anyways). Even if Dick Clark died sometime this year, we might never know. The magic of television could just show the telecast from December 31st, 2001 and digitally edit the '2002' to '2003.'

The only thing I look forward to on January 1st is our church's tackle football game (or as Bennie calls it " two hand touch, but you might fall down"). All the tough guys from my church in San Francisco get together for football on Thanksgiving and New Year's. I wasn't there for the one and only Christmas Bowl, but they played flag instead of tackle and someone ended up with a black eye. That's why we don't play flag football. It's too dangerous. This past Thanksgiving, we played a relatively injury free game. Norm suffered a concussion after being sacked while playing QB. He doesn't remember what happened, so everyone was telling him what a great QB he was before he had to leave the game. He was 1 for 3 for about 7 yards. Somehow I always end up playing on the smaller team. I then try to convince my teammates that we can win with our speed. That works until the first running play of the game. I also like to design simple misdirection plays, but only 2 of my 10 teammates understand the timing of the play, so the RB or QB ends up getting squashed. Knowing how to play Madden 2003 should be a requirement to play on my team. That would make playcalling much easier. Another element that makes it hard for our plays to work is that our offensive line holds up on average for 1.3 seconds. Nevertheless, we still have a good time, running our flea flickers and hail marys. January 1st, 2003 at West Sunset. The CBC Bowl brought to you by Triscuit garden herb crackers from Nabisco. Good seats still available.
