It's been a busy Labor Day weekend so far, and I've still got Monday to go. In between Bennie's Labor Day party out in Concord and our $20 Texas Hold'em Tournament, we had our annual fantasy football draft.
I play in a 14 team league, with each team selecting 15 players each. We start QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, K. Most fantasy leagues have 10 or 12 teams, meaning most of our 2nd round picks are 3rd or 4th round picks in other drafts. We select a total of 210 players, compared to 150 or 180. This has its advantages and disadvantages.
Round 1: Due to the weakness of my team last year, I had the fifth overall pick. I wanted Clinton Portis, but Dan had just taken him with the 4th pick, so I had to choose between Ahman Green and Randy Moss. Even though the stud running back was tempting, I went with Randy Moss. I think the NFL rules this season will allow receivers to have big numbers.
Round 4: In a surprise move, newcomer Benard selects TE Boo Williams from the New Orleans Saints. Later Brian declares Benard's team had the worst draft of all time in our league's 5 year history.
Round 5: I now have my three starting wideouts with Moss, Isaac Bruce and Donte Stallworth. I like them. What I do not like is my starting RB's, Chris Brown and Charlie Garner.
Round 7: Someone drafts the first kicker. Another owner actually gets upset over the kicker pick because he was going to draft a kicker that round. I do not value kickers and will not pick one until at least round 14.
Round 8: The 'hate' picks start. This is one of the advantages of a deep league. A hate pick is when you draft a backup of another league owner's star player with the hope that the star player will get hurt so your guy can take over the starting spot and gain the big numbers. Hate picks this round include Willis Mcgahee (backs up Travis Henry), Stephen Jackson (Marshall Faulk's backup), and Chester Taylor (in case Jamal Lewis goes to jail).
Round 9: Drew Bledsoe is going to have an awesome year. One of the best parts of any live draft is convincing someone to draft a player who probably should go much lower in the draft.
Round 12: I now have 6 WR's. My running backs situation sucks. Unless if Curtis Martin gets hurt.
Round 15: My last pick is a hate pick. Maurice Morris of the Seattle Seahawks. He could probably start for a few teams, but the Seahawks have Shaun Alexander. I let the draft end without drafting Az-Zahir Hakim. Luckily nobody else drafted him, so I may be able to pick him up off the waiver wire. He is the best #4 receiver in the league.
The NFL season starts on Thursday. I'm ready.
