Another Addition to the List of People Who Make Cal Mad: Elecia Battle

A few days ago, I saw a press conference on CNN about this lady, Elecia Battle, in Ohio who filed a lawsuit against another woman who had the winning lottery ticket. Ms. Battle claims the winning ticket really belonged to her and she had lost it when she dropped her purse, so she should be the one getting the jackpot.

Has our society become so devoid of common sense that people actually think they can get away with stuff like this? (No wonder we have no chance against the aliens!) I can't believe that she found a lawyer willing to believe her story and file a lawsuit on her behalf, but that is not why I am mad. On that day, Ms. Battle was put on the Mad Cal List of Dumb People. This is not so bad, as there are people doing dumb things all the time (see the paper-stacking guy from Allan's 1/1/04 post ). I do not get upset at these people, because being dumb is punishment enough.

A rare few commit acts that are so stupid, they get put on the List of People Who Make Cal Mad, usually reserved for policemen who pull me over or punk kids with bad attitudes. These are people I would like to slap with my mace. Ms. Battle was upgraded to this list when I saw yet another press conference involving her today. She admitted to lying about the story (you know, because so many people thought she was telling the truth), but she was crying and saying she just wanted the money for her family and kids. That's what got me mad. Doing something so ridiculously stupid, then trying to get public sympathy by portraying herself as a victim, who was only thinking of her kids. What a load of crap. At least she faces possible jail time for making some kind of false report.
